Dean Pupils Heading To The Worlds.
This week sixteen pupils and a teacher from the Dean Maguirc College will set off for the biggest handball event to take place in Ireland, the 2012 world handball championships in the City West Hotel, Dublin.
The Dean has always had a wealth of talented handballers at its disposal over the years having strong feeder clubs in the local area. Clubs such as Loughmacrory, Carrickmore, Brackey, Pomeroy and Greencastle have all provided some strong players over the years which have resulted in numerous All-Ireland titles.
The pupils taking part in these championships include Shane McCrystal, Ronan Curran, Aoife Kelly and Micheala Curran (Loughmacrory), Patrick McCrory, Luke Kelly, Conor McCaughey, Cormac Munroe, Padraig Begley, Ciaran Daly, Aaron Donnelly, Conor Kelly, Ciaran Cuddy and Conor Keenan (Carrickmore), Sean Kerr and Eilise McCrory (Brackey).
The school is very fortunate to have a Principal such as Mr Warnock at the helm who continues to support his pupils in all aspects of school life. The school has been very generous in providing a special jersey for each pupil playing in the Worlds and this only highlights their commitment to their pupils.
Patrick McCrory who is playing in the Under 17 grade, stated that “the school continues to help us improve in all aspects of life and coming up to the worlds, they have kindly given us the time off required to play. Mr Warnock also talked to the players and gave us reassurance of just how much the school are behind us”. This means a great deal to the players as they can now focus completely on the task at hand.
The pupils’ coach at the school Mr Conal Curran who is also taking part in these championships, feels that this sort of experience for young players is “invaluable, not only to their development within the sport but also in their life experience. There are some serious title contenders among this group of players, and I’m sure they will all give a good account of themselves,” he added.
