Defeat For St.Josephs In MacRory Cup
Saturday 16.11.2024
St.Macartan’s Monaghan 1-12 St.Joseph’s Donaghmore 0-8
A strong first half when they had the wind at their backs helped lay the platform for St.Macartan’s Monaghan to make it two wins from two in this season’s Danske Bank MacRory Cup at the expense of St.Joseph’s Donaghmore at Roslea on Friday afternoon.
The winners established a 1-6 to 0-2 interval lead and while their opponents closed the gap to four going into the final quarter five unanswered points from St.Macartan’s ensured victory. A John McCrystal brace followed Killian Kearns’ opening score before a Darragh Donaghy free got Donaghmore up and running.
The only goal of the game arrived after a quarter of an hour when full forward Kearns fired past keeper Adam Cushnahan who moments earlier had made a good save. McCrystal and corner back Larry Shields exchanged points before efforts from Luke McKenna and Kearns left the Monaghan lads in control at the short whistle.
With the elements now in their favour the Tyrone school had the better of things in the third quarter as Donaghy knocked over 2 “45s” as well as pointing from play with Ultan Quinn also on target with St.Macartan’s sole response coming from a Kearns free.
The scene looked set for a grandstand finish as St.Joseph’s strived to pick up their first points of the campaign but St.Macartan’s sensed the danger to step on the gas to pull away from their opponents. Kearns, Andrew Stewart, McCrystal and McKenna all registered with Donaghmore’s only response coming from a Donaghy placed ball as St.Macartan’s sealed a deserved victory.
