Murphy’s Gaelic Gloves Senior Football Championship

St Macartans 9-13

Carrickmore 2-3

Champions St Macartan’s remain on course for four in a row of senior titles as they powered through this quarter final against Carrickmore at Pomeroy hitting five first half goals as they once again confirmed their championship credentials.

Only briefly did a youthful St Colmcilles threaten. They came within seven points of the Mac’s when veteran Gemma Begley steered home her sides second goal but in truth the damage was beyond repair even at that stage as Paula Donnelly, Chloe Mc Caffrey and a Cathy Maguire brace of goals in a blistering opening ten minutes left Carmen chasing the game. Aobhinn Murray had scored an earlier Carrickmore goal after a great delivery from the impressive Eve Loughran,

St Macartan’s finished the half strongly and Mc Caffrey tagged on the fifth goal in the latter stages of the half before she finished the game with a healthy 3-6. The scoreboard kept ticking over through the third quarter with Paula Donnelly, Mc Caffey and player of the match Slaine Mc Carroll all among the Macs points. Team manager Ryan Mc Menamin will have been delighted with eleven different players on the scoresheet.

Late goals from Shauna Mc Girr, Colleen Mc Quaid, Mc Caffrey and corner back Marie Treanor came as Carrickmore ran the bench allowing some of the club’s promising youngsters some championship experience, but take nothing away from St Macartan’s this was an impressive display.

Underlined by some super scores, they were full of running, quality passing , great composure at the back and remain as hungry as ever as they booked a semi-final spot. The final scoreline makes tough reading for Carrickmore and while it may be difficult there were some fine performances from players with a bright future.
