Defensive problems are mounting for holders Tyrone ahead of their championship encounter with neighbours Derry at Celtic Park on Sunday week.

At Thursday night’s press gathering in Garvaghey, Red Hands manager Mickey Harte admitted that their defensive options have taken a hit in recent weeks with Johnny Monroe leaving the panel and Joe McMahon announcing his retirement during the week.

On top of that they have injury concerns with Justin McMahon unlikely to make it and three time All-star nominee Cathal McCarron struggling to be fit.

“Justy has been very unlucky over the years with niggly injuries,” said Harte.

“He has a quad injury at the moment and has been unable to train for a number of weeks. It’s a pity because he is another man who is so versatile and so capable.

“Cathal’s hamstring is a real concern for us. It only happened a week ago and he thinks that it is not too bad but we have had a lot of experience with hamstring injuries and what used to be considered not too bad could be three or four weeks trouble.

He has had a superb last few years for us and has a lot of experience and we are hoping that he will be there but at this moment in time he is certainly in the doubtful category.”
