Derg Seal Minor Double
Saturday 14.09.2024
Castlederg made it a minor league and championship double on Saturday afternoon when they finished the Grade Three League final strongly to defeat Killeeshil 3-10 to 2-5. A large crowd was present at Greencastle to watch two well matched sides battle it out for the title before the Derg, inspired by some superb point taking by Oisin Lynch, pulled away to win.
This was an entertaining and highly competitive game between two well balanced sides who were only separated by a single point at the break with Killeeshil leading 2-2 to 2-1.
Nathan Kelly opened the first half scoring with a goal after five minutes but it took another ten minutes before either side scored again.
Kelly fired over his team’s first point of the day as Killeeshil took advantage of playing with the wind. A minute later and Corin Mc Connell hit the net to reduce the gap to one. Killeeshil responded with a point from Callum Mc William and both sides swapped goals courtesy of Nathan Kelly and Corin Mc Connell. The sides left the field at the break with Killeeshil leading by a single point on the scoreboard line of 2-2 to 2-1.
With both defences on top scores were hard to come by and Killeeshil began to tire as the wind took its toll. Oisin Lynch and Sean Russell swapped points before Lynch struck three superb points without reply. Eoghan O’Neill got his side back in the contest with a brace of points but the Derg finished strongly with points from Lynch, Emmett Patton and a superb goal from Corin Mc Connell.
The Derg deservedly saw it out to win on a final score of 3-10 to 2-5.
