Derrylaughan got the Hunky Dorys Intermediate championship off to a great start on Wednesday night when they defeated neighbours Stewartstown 4-21 to 1-8. Played in fine conditions at a splendid looking Paddy Cullen Park in Cookstown the Kevin Barrys produced some sublime attacking football with wing forwards Liam Gervin and Ciaran Quinn (1-3) outstanding for the winners. Dan Lowe carried most of the scoring threat for a disappointing Stewartstown side who found a resolute Derrylaughan defence hard to break down. Sean Robinson and Ciaran O’Hagan stood out for the winners at the back and their strong tackling and fast running ensured their forward line was kept supplied with quality ball throughout the game. Derrylaughan reached the break 1-11 to 1-4 in front following a fine scoring run just before the break when they hit five unanswered points. The Harps required a fast start to the second half but even though they threw on big guns Gareth Devlin and Peter Armour they could not change the flow of the game. Martin Mc Stravog , Brendan Quinn and Ciaran Gervin hit second half goals as Brian Robinson’s side put down a marker for this year’s championship.
