Disappointing End For U20s

Kerry have lifted their first All Ireland under 20 title in eighteen years at the expense of treble seeking Tyrone in Croke Park.

For twenty minutes Tyrone were superb, they attacked with purpose and pace, with Shea McDermott, Peter Colton and Adrian McGurren causing all sorts of problems to the Kerry defence. The tenacity in the tackle and sheer pressure forced plenty of turnovers and it was no surprise to see the Red Hands race to a 1-7 to 0-2 lead with eighteen minutes played.

The 11th minute goal from Shea McDermott illustrated Tyrone quality Leo Hughes and McGurren combined to release the Errigal attacker to confidently strike past Robak.

The problem for Tyrone was when Daniel Kirby and man of the match Evan Boyle took control of midfield, they applied a vice like grip and relentlessly turned the screw for the remainder of the contest. The Tyrone kick out collapsed and Kerry had ample opportunities to whittle away the Tyrone advantage. Midfielders Boyle and Kirby combined for four points in the final five minutes of the half as Tyrone led 1-8 0-9 at the break.

Tyrone had to wait over twenty minutes on their next score, but in the interim period the kingdom had landed six scores which included a two point free from Gearoid White.

A quick fire brace from McDermott brought his tally to 1-6 gave Tyrone renewed hope with ten remaining, but that was as good as it got, another two point free from White stretched their advantage. A brace of frees from Tomas Kennedy confirmed victory for Tomas O’Se’s side.

Paul Devlin’s men fell at the final hurdle but can be hugely proud of their efforts throughout the campaign. For a fifth game in succession they didn’t concede a goal. Many of the group can look forward to successful careers at senior level. Paul and his management team will obviously be disappointed but can reflect on a fine campaign.
