Tyrone Ladies Senior League Final

St Macartans 3-09
Aodh Ruadh 2-08

St Macartans lifted the senior League title for a second year in a row after defeating a strongly fancied Aodh Ruadh side at Dunmoyle on Saturday evening. This was a tough outcome for the Dungannon side following their championship final defeat earlier in the season.

St Macartans began brightly but failed to capitalise on possession until wing back Maria Donnelly steadied the nerves with a point after some good play. Niamh Mc Girr added a well taken free before Cathy Donnelly hit the net after some direct running from Paula Donnelly to leave the score 1-2 to 0-0.
Dungannon eventually found their range with Mary Cassidy to the fore in the defence. Aoife McGahan was in fine form scoring three great points from placed balls before Aodh Ruadh’s centre forward Nichola Rafferty fired to the back of the net to put her side one point in front.
In the final quarter of the first half Macartans defenders Maura McMenamin and Lynda Donnelly got to grips with the Aodh Ruadh attack and with Shauna McGirr moving to pick up Cassidy the space was left up front for Niamh McGirr to rattle the net. This score was quickly followed by a Paula Donnelly point before Aileen Hackett lofted over a monstrous effort from wing half back to leave St Macartans going in at the break four in front. Half time score St Macartans 2-04 Aodh Ruadh 1-03.

The game remained keenly contested during the course of the second half with plenty of drama at both ends to ensure the tie lived up to its billing. Aodh Ruadh introduced Niamh Hughes and Carol McGlinchey from the bench with McGlinchey tagging on a free before Rafferty and McGahan added points. Niamh McGirr and McGahan traded frees before Rafferty rose to claim her second major to leave the score 2-8 to 2-5. It looked as if the match was swinging in the favour of the Aodh Ruadh side before the on form Paula Donnelly rocketed to the net to revive the Macartans challenge and level the game.
Colleen McQuaid added a great point from play after some great work in defence from Mary- Louise Mellon. Aileen Hackett and Shauna McQuaid kept Aodh Ruadh at bay in a tense final five minutes before the sound of the final whistle brought joyous celebrations for the Clogher Valley girls. Captain Lynda Donnelly lifted the Masterskreen shield on behalf of her team mates to ensure it stayed in the Clogher Valley Club for the second year in a row.
