Donaghmore created history at Dunmoyle on Wednesday evening when they won the grade one U21 championship for the first time with a richly deserved 0-14 to 0-9 victory. Declan McNulty and Cormac McCann traded early points from frees before Emmett McNabb levelled matters.

A superb effort with the outside of the boot from impressive midfielder Peter McKenna brought the sides level and while Andrew McGrath put Dromore back in front the rest of the half belonged to the St.Patricks. McKenna hit another brace with Richard Kelly, Brannon Molloy and Sean McCaul on target as well as they led 0-8 to 0-4 at the interval.

A superb long range Ruairi Sludden free opened the second half scoring and by the 8th minute the gap had been cut to the minimum after points from Ronan McNabb and half back Cahir McElhom. Tiernan Drayne then opened Donaghmore’s second half account but efforts from Ciaran McCormick and McNulty left it all square with eight minutes left to play.

It was anybody’s game at that stage but it was Donaghmore who took the game by the scruff of the neck with Shea Hamill playing a real Captain’s part. Philip Donnelly hit two superb efforts from play with Deasun Quinn knocking over two frees while Drayne found the range as well as they closed out the game in style.
