Donegal U17s got their Ulster U17 campaign off to a winning start in Ballyshannon on Saturday afternoon despite only scoring once in the second half. Tyrone went into the break eight points off the lead after playing into the face of a very stiff breeze.

Donegal made the most of their wind advantage clipping over five points inside the opening 11 minutes with Shane O’Donnell, Senan Rooney and Seamus Og Byrne all finding their range. Tyrone’s opening point came in the 13th minute, Stephen Grogan popping up with the score. Donegal moved the four point lead to seven a minute later when a long range Senan Rooney free deceived goalkeeper Mark McGale to leave the scoreline 1-5 to 0-1.

Things might have been much worse for Tyrone had Lorcan Kilpatrick not superbly intercepted a slick Donegal move a few seconds later. Inspired by that challenge Tyrone hit back with the next two scores. Kevin Barker and Stephen Grogan on target. Donegal produced a strong finish to the opening half and produced three more points via Leo Dunphy, midfielder Pauric Gettigan and Dylan Doogan. Half Time : Donegal 1-8 Tyrone 0-3.

Tyrone needed to make a fast start to the second period and they did slamming over six points in fifteen minutes. Simon Garrity, Ronan Duffin, Lorcan McBride and Stephen Grogan all contributing with points. That put the Red Hands within two points of Donegal but the hosts were to get a tremendous shot in the arm when they were awarded and converted a 53rd minute penalty. Cathal Gillespie keeping his cool to roll the ball into the net.

Tyrone kept the pressure on in the closing stages and brought themselves to within a single point. Mark Hayes, Simon Garrity, Stephen Grogan and Oisin McCann slotting the last four scores of the contest. Final Score : Donegal 2-8 Tyrone 0-13.
