It was a day of double disappointment for the county’s young hurlers on Saturday as the under 20s and the minors both lost in their competitions. The u20s lost out to Roscommon after extra time in their B Championship semi final fixture while the minors travelled to Carndonagh to compete in the Electric Ireland Celtic Challenge.

The game at Garvaghy was one to remember with little between the sides as they both battled for supremacy. Among the first half scorers for Tyrone were Shea Monroe, Aidan Woods and Pierce Mullin. The sides reached the break with Tyrone trailing 3-2 to 0-9 with Roscommon’s ability to plunder goals proving vital.

A Shea Monroe goal early in the second half levelled things and it remained a tight and competitive affair from then until the end. Roscommon moved three clear with goal midway through the second half but Tyrone continued to work hard. Points from Rory and Aidan Woods narrowed the gap and further scores from Liam Griffin and Aidan Woods had the sides level again with the clock showing fifty seven minutes played. Woods pointed again and Tyrone were ahead again before Roscommon levelled to take the contest to extra time.

Points from Aidan Woods and Shea Monroe put Tyrone two clear but Roscommon dug deep and had the sides level early in the second half of extra time before a fifth Roscommon goal put the visitors three clear. A further Roscommon point left four between the teams and Roscommon made it through to the final on a full time score of 5-10 to 1-18.

The minors made the long run to Carndonagh for their clash with Donegal. The game took place on a pitch that did little for the promotion of the game with the sliotar getting stuck on a really difficult playing surface. There were battling displays all over the field as the young Red Hands hurled with great pride and intensity in spite  of the difficult conditions.  There were fine performances from Cahir Cassidy, Daniel Kane, Shea Mc Ginn and Pearse Clarke. Final score 1-16 to 1-10 for Donegal.
