Tyrone Schools St Ciarans Ballygawley and Holy Trinity Cookstown enjoyed wins today in their respective Ulster Vocational Schools games. The Cookstown lads had a facile 9-12 to 0-04 win over Donegal champions Gweedore in the Mc Devitt Cup quarter final at Newtownstewart this morning. A Caolan Mallaghan goal after fifteen seconds set the tone for the game as the Tyrone champions dominated the match with James Devlin, David Mulgrew, Shane Mc Keown and Shaun Conway all on target. They now progress to face St Mark’s Warrenpoint in the semi final of the competition.
Meanwhile there was a hard fought four point win for St Ciaran’s Ballygawley on their way to the final of the Markey Cup. The Ballygawley school overcame a stern examination of their credentials against Virginia College at Templeport this afternoon in a game where a Sean Murphy first half goal proved crucial to the outcome. The second half saw the Cavan lads raise the tempo with Gerard Smyth in fine form for his side. An outstanding save from Paul O’Hagan in the St Ciaran’s goal kept his side ahead and with Sean Hackett of Augher landing some delightful points the Tyrone school advanced to the final where they will meet the winners of the second semi final between Holy Trinity and Ballybay of Monaghan. That game is scheduled to take place at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh on the 7th of February.
