Sunday’s Power NI Tyrone senior championship win for Dromore rounded off what has been a pretty impressive year for them so far completing a notable double double. This latest victory for the Gardrum Park men added the senior championship to the reserve knockout title which was won at Galbally just over a week ago while they still have the Division One League title to compete for.
There were several of the members of Sunday’s victorious panel who lifted reserve and senior medals in the space of just over eight days. These two victories show the strength and depth of Dromore’s present senior set up and while it was interesting to see the likes of Niall Sludden, Conor O’Neill and Ronan Mc Nabb make vital contributions to their success it is worth bearing in mind that there are several other very promising youngsters coming through plus a few “old hands” like Micky Garry, Shane Mc Mahon and Kevin O’Brien around which helps with the competition for places.
Their win over Clonoe saw Dromore lift their third O’Neill Cup in the space of five years and while it was very much a team display it turned out to be more than a day to remember for team captain Eoin Mc Cusker. In addition to being presented with the cup he also won the Patsy Forbes sponsored top scorers trophy following his personal return of 1-02 in the final. He became the third member of his club to lift the top scorer trophy for the second time following in the footsteps of Colm Mc Cullagh and the legendary Tommy Fiddis. Former marksman Fiddis actually lifted the trophy on three separate occasions but never managed to be on the winning side in a county final.
Eoin Mc Cusker ended the 2011 championship campaign with 2-21 to his name finishing fifteen points ahead of his nearest rivals but while he took some joy in doing so it was receiving the O’Neill Cup on behalf of his team mates that meant the most to him. Perhaps the sharp shooter might receive a phone call from the county squad to join the panel for 2012. With scoring returns like these and his willingness to work hard he looks ideally suited to county football.
