Drumquin Claim Minor Championship
Sunday 17.08.2025
Drumquin Wolfe Tones claimed the Grade Three Minor Championship on Saturday after a dominant display against neighbours and rivals Castlederg that resulted in a 2-12 to 1-10 win.
Played on a resplendent Urney pitch the supporters were treated to some quality play from both sides before the Tones emerged victorious. The Derg lads might well look back on this one with a tinge of regret concerning their defensive approach when playing with the wind in the first half.
Castlederg led 0-3 to 0-2 after seventeen minutes as Drumquin enjoyed more possession but came up short too many times when shooting into the breeze. A two pointer from Corin Mc Connell put the Derg 0-3 to 0-2 ahead but from then on they played second fiddle to a Drumquin side who had superb displays from Player of the Match Kieran Mc Donagh, Hugh Gormley, Daithi Mc Kay, Jake Donnelly and Eoin Ferris.
There was plenty of talent on view on the Derg side also with Dylan Mc Crory, Ryan Mc Cullagh, Shea Leonard, Diego Lara, Oisin Lynch, John Gallagher and Oisin Harvey to the fore throughout.

Tied at 0-3 apiece and with half time approaching Drumquin moved ahead with a point from Daithi Mc Kay, a goal from Mc Donagh and a pointed free from the boot of Eoin Ferris to send them off at the break leading 1-4 to 0-3.
The Derg were much improved after the break and as both sides landed early two pointers the pace increased considerably. A superb strike from Mc Donagh was cancelled out by a Corin Mc Connell effort as both sides battled for every ball. Another two pointer from from Mc Donagh put Drumquin six clear before the Derg hit something of a purple patch scoring 1-3 in the course of three minutes to reduce the gap to two points 1-10 to 1-08. Mc Connell with 0-2 and Oisin Lynch with a brilliant goal to bring his side back into the game. Indeed they could have moved ahead had they made better use of the possession they enjoyed at that time.

Drumquin weathered the storm however and a Jake Donnelly pointed calmed the Wolfe Tones nerves. A well crafted counter attack on twenty two minutes saw Eoin Ferris finish to the net to make it 2-11 to 1-8 for Drumquin and although the Derg refused to give up Drumquin held out to win 2-12 to 1-10 with their last point coming from the boot of Mc Donagh while Castlederg struck the last two scores of the game courtesy of John Gallagher and Corin Mc Connell.
Final score : Drumquin Wolfe Tones 2-12, Castlederg 1-10.
