Drumquin and Killeeshil served up a real cracker of a first round tie at Loughmacrory on Saturday evening before Drumquin eventually emerged as 3-14 to 3-10 winners.

Early scores from Packy Mc Mullan and Pascal Donaghy gave Killeeshil the perfect start before points from Frankie Mc Alynn and Paul Sheridan tied the game. However a mistake in the Drumquin defence allowed Liam Hughes in for a goal to put Killeeshil 1-2 to 0-2 ahead after eight minutes.

The Wolfe Tones were rocked on their heels but led by Sheridan and Liam Patterson Drumquin began to get on top. Between the tenth and the thirteenth minutes a point apiece from Barry Sheridan and Daniel Mc Swiggan and a goal from the mercurial Eamon Teague swung the game very much in their favour.

Killeeshil were struggling to win primary possession as Drumquin continued to boss the game. A brace of frees from Paul Sheridan and 1-1 from Teague sent them 2-7 to 0-2 clear. As the game entered first half injury time the leaders added further points from Frankie Mc Alynn (2) and minor star Cormac Rodgers to send the Tones in 2-10 to 0-2 in front and in a seemingly unassailable position.

However the second half saw a very young Killeeshil side throw off the shackles and turn the game on its head. The policy of putting the ball in long and early paid off and Drumquin got the fright of their lives in that second period. Within ten minutes of the restart Pascal Donaghy bagged 2-1 to give his team hope. Further points from Enda Hamill and Ruairi O’Neill had Drumquin rattled. Frankie Mc Alynn managed to temporarily stem the green and white tide with a converted free to extend the lead to five but Killeeshil now had momentum and another brace of points from Donaghy reduced the gap to three.

The game continued to ebb and flow but a fine point from Mattie Mc Dermott and a goal from Mc Alynn seemed to have settled the game in Drumquin’s favour. Once again however back came Killeeshil. Liam Hughes and Ruairi O’Neill hit points before Hughes finished off a superb move to the net.

The lead was now down to two points and with five minutes left it was anybody’s game. Indeed Killeeshil came close to snatching the lead when Ciaran Rafferty out-jumped the Drumquin defence to flick the ball goalwards. Luckily for Drumquin corner back Gary Mc Conomy was in the right place at the right time and the danger was averted.

With both teams running on empty experience was always going to prove vital and they don’t come any more experienced than Drumquin’s Liam Patterson. The veteran controlled possession in the closing minutes and helped set up late scores for Frankie Mc Alynn and Cormac Rodgers to see Drumquin through to the quarter final following a hard fought 3-14 to 3-10 win.
