Dungannon Come Up Short
Sunday 02.11.2014
Dungannon exited the Ulster Intermediate Series following a two point defeat to a very capable Warrenpoint side on Sunday at Newry.
The Tyrone champions failed to find the rhythm and intensity they had shown in their county final win over Trillick. The Clarkes struggled to gain a foothold around the middle third as Warrenpoint’s Ryan Mallon. Jamie Grant and Johnny Cowan ensured their nippy full forward line received a steady supply of quality ball.
Dungannon just about shaded an entertaining first half but had to settle for going in tied at the break 1-5 to 0-8 with their goal coming in the third minute from the open hand of Patrick Quinn. Even at that stage however the signs were ominous for Dungannon with Warrenpoint’s Ross Mc Garry bagging six first half points.
Mc Garry continued to shine in the second half and when Warrenpoint moved ahead in the twelfth minute they took a lead they were maintain until the final whistle. Magee, Grant and substitute Mc Mahon all added points for the Down champions while a hat trick of scores from Mc Garry saw them open up a five point lead.
As the game entered injury time the Clarkes went for broke and closed the gap to two following a goal and a point from captain Kiefer Morgan. However it was too little too late and Warrenpoint held out for a deserved two point win 0-17 to 2-9.
