Dungannon Clarkes travelled to take on near neighbours and rivals Brackaville early this afternoon knowing that a win would move them a step closer to the Division Three league title. The Clarkes played with the breeze in the first half but it was the home side who looked like table toppers with a very assured display early on. They contained most of Dungannon’s best efforts and then moved into a three point lead on twenty minutes when Sean Mc Nally finished to the net after a fine team move.
Dungannon responded with scores from Peter Muldoon and Adam Mallon before corner forward Kiefer Morgan slotted home a penalty just before half time. A further point from Patrick Quinn ensured the visitors went in at the short whistle leading 1-4 to 1-2.
Brackaville came out for the start of the second half in confident manner but first blood went to Dungannon courtesy of a point from the boot of Adam Mallon who was having a very effective afternoon. Three points from the home team tied the game but Mallon with a fine brace put the Clarkes in control again. The game was delayed for quite a while following two injuries and as a result considerable additional time was required. The home supporters and players felt they had saved the game when Martin Girvan converted a free ten minutes into added time. However before they had time to reorganise Dungannon broke up the field, won a free and saw Dominic Hand kick from distance to win the game for the Clarkes.
Today’s result may not have won the league for Shay Mc Keown’s side but it has certainly put them into a very strong position as they now sit six points clear of Brackaville who saw their fantastic unbeaten run finally come to an end. More worryingly still for the Owen roes was the number of injuries that they suffered which is sure to lessen their options for the forthcoming Junior Championship Final.
