Ulster Minor Club Hurling semi final
Dungannon Eoghan Ruadh 2-12 Slaughtneil Emmett’s 3-16
Dungannon’s interest in the Ulster Minor club hurling championship came to a disappointing end, at Ballinascreen this afternoon, when the Tyrone champions suffered a seven point semi final defeat to Slaughtneil.
The Tyrone teenagers can hold their heads high following a rousing second half fight back, at a time, when they could easily have been forgiven for throwing in the towel.
Cormac O’Doherty proved to be the leading light for the Emmett’s, as he tormented the Ruadh defence all afternoon on his way to a personal haul of 3-8. His three goals all came in the first half and, with Michael McGrath and Gerald Bradley chipping in with some quality points, the Derry side enjoyed a whopping 3-7 to 0-4 half time lead.
However, any notion they held of cantering home in the second half evaporated as goals from Tiernan Morgan and Duibhuir Marshall brought Dungannon right back into the hunt. Damian Casey popped over some quality points from play and frees, but the score of the day was undoubtedly from the hurl of young Slaughtneil forward Brendan Rodgers, who having taken a pass from Joe O’Loughlin blasted over from all of 80 yards.
It was a superb score and, while Dungannon fought to the end, they had no answer to the class of O’Doherty, who embellished his reputation as one of the brightest stars in Ulster hurling.
