LCC Group IFC Final
Edendork 1-17 Gortin 1-9

Edendork have made a quick return to Senior football after they justified their favourites tag with a comfortable eight point success over Gortin at Healy Park on Saturday evening.

It was a game that the St.Malachys were always in control of with man of the match Darren McCurry leading by example with 1-8 to his tally with all but three of those scores coming from play. This was by no means a one man show though with the winners having a number of fine performers throughout the field such as Donal Maneely, Jack Donnelly, Stephen Corr, Conn Kilpatrick, Niall Morgan and team Captain Conor Mallon.

As expected Gortin battled for every ball from first whistle to last but on the day they came out second best against a side who were favourites for the Paddy Cullen Cup before a ball was kicked. Ruairi Keenan had a superb game finishing with 0-4 to his name with Peter Keenan working hard as well while Shane Clarke belied his age as he fought for every ball that came his way and he was rewarded late on with his side’s goal. It only served though to put a slightly better look on the scoreboard as Edendork completed the first leg of what they hope will be the double as they have a league final still to play.

Twice in the opening eight minutes Gortin had their noses in front through Eoghan McGarvey and Peter Keenan but each time Harry Og Conlon and Daire Conway replied for the winners before centre half back Stephen Corr put the St.Malachys in front for the first time. A Sean Og McAleer free levelled matters but in the 14th minute Edendork took a lead that they were never to lose when McCurry galloped through before firing low to the bottom left hand corner of the net past keeper Christopher Greene.

McCurry then kicked a brace of quality points before midfielder Jake Ferguson got in on the act after a shot from Mallon had come back off the post. Ruairi Keenan landed a brilliant point from distance but Edendork continued to dictate the pace of the game with McCurry and Morgan on target either side of a black card for Gortin’s Eoghan McGarvey as the winners greeted the short whistle 1-9 to 0-4 in front.

Edendork and McCurry picked up where they had left off on the restart as the Tyrone attacker knocked over two superb frees from distance. Gortin substitute Sean McKenna converted a free but with over twenty minutes still to play they were fighting a losing battle. McCurry continued to kick a series of eye catching scores while Ruairi Keenan responded with a brace.

Gortin were back up to their full complement of players again at this stage and they closed the gap slightly with points from Keenan and McGarvey. Kilpatrick became the 8th player to get his name on the scoresheet for Edendork before Gortin got a consolation goal in the 61st minute when Clarke dived to punch a McKenna cross to the net. Edendork though had the final say with an outstanding Morgan free conversion from distance from out on the right wing as they returned to senior football at the first time of asking.
