Eglish 1-13 Clogher 1-9

A four point win for Eglish but in reality a backs to the wall struggle for the Division 2 league champions.  They will look back at this one and thank their lucky stars that they got out of it in one piece.  Clogher might well have caused an upset.  It was a performance from them this afternoon that begs the question as to how they’ve managed to end up in a do or die relegation battle is a few weeks time.

Eglish hit the ground running in this one and were five points to the good by the 10th minute.  Ethan Jordan opened the scoring in the 1st minute, followed by a Luke Donnelly free and three points from Michael McGleenan, Matthew McGleenan and Dan Muldoon.  Clogher would dominate the next twenty minutes of the half outscoring Eglish 0-6 to 0-2.  Their scores coming from four points for Ciaran Bogue and two Ryan McCaughey frees.  Luke Donnelly scored a point in the 21st minute for Eglish but it could have been a goal if it weren’t for the excellent reactions of Paul Tierney in the Clogher goals.  The only other Eglish scorer during that time was Jack Muldoon.  Half Time – Eglish 0-7 Clogher 0-6.

Clogher started off the second period where the left off and by the 46th minute they led the game by three points.  A Ryan McCaughey free in the opening minute levelled the sides and six minutes later Mark McConnell eased the valley men in front.  A Colm Byrne fisted point in the 44th minute was Eglish’s first score for 17 minutes.  A brilliantly taken Mark McConnell penalty put Clogher into a three point lead with sixteen minutes to go.  An upset looked to be on the cards.  They failed to capitalise on it.  Eglish took the initiative.  A second Colm Byrne point from play was followed with a Shane McCann point and a second from Seamus Muldoon to level the game.  By the 58th minute Eglish had regained the lead.  Ethan Jordan splitting the posts with a classy point from long range.  Three minutes into injury time and down to 14 men Eglish hit Clogher for a goal from Seamus Muldoon to drive home the advantage.

A late Ryan McCaughey free was cancelled out with Colm Byrne’s last point of the game to leave the final score Eglish 1-13 Clogher 1-9.
