Eglish 2-16 Naomh Eoghan 2-9

Eglish justified their favourites tag to advance to the last eight of the LCC Intermediate championship but they were made to work hard for their victory against a dogged Naomh Eoghan side.

The winners were against the wind in the first half but they played some superb football to establish a healthy eight point cushion. Ethan Jordan opened the scoring before midfielder Matthew McGleenan doubled their advantage, the duo going on to hit four points each from play. Eglish then grabbed an early goal when midfielder Cathal McGready took a pass from Seamus Muldoon to palm to the net after an initial shot from McGready had come back off the post.

Full forward Brendan Boyle then opened Naomh Eoghan’s account from a mark but it was Eglish that continued to make all the early running. Seamus Muldoon knocked over a free with Jordan and wing half back Colm Byrne adding points from play before Naomh Eoghan defender Eoin Bradley scored at the other end of the field. Jordan and McGleenan exchanged points with Boyle and Aidan McSorley before Conall McNulty burst out of defence to hit a superb point for Eglish. McSorley then bagged a well taken goal but on the stroke of halftime Byrne got a second Eglish goal to leave them well in control at the interval, 2-10 to 1-5.

Byrne opened the second half scoring as well before McGleenan and Emmett McKenna pushed Eglish further in front. To their credit Naomh Eoghan kept battling away and they reduced the deficit with four points in a row from Boyle as well as a goal from wing half back Niall O’Kane. Eglish though didn’t panic and they reeled off a trio of points from Gregory Jordan, McGleenan and Conor McCann to ensure that they will face either Owen Roes or Gortin in the quarter finals.
