The second game in the double bill of U14 Championship finals at Stewartstown on Saturday afternoon proved to be a gripping encounter as well as Eglish won the Grade 2 competition at the expense of a gallant Moortown.
It took seven minutes for the opening score to arrive but it was worth waiting for as Eglish’s Seimi Muldoon fired to the net. Ethan McCarron and midfielder James McCormack tagged on points as the winners made the perfect start to the decider. Jacob Ferguson was outstanding at full back for Moortown and his display began to rally his teammates. Oisin McVey, Caiden Martin, Thomas Kelly and a three from impressive full forward Timmy Kelly had the Loughshore lads in front by the 22nd minute. Odhran O’Mairtin stopped the rot for Eglish with a point as Moortown keeper Padraig Lavery brilliantly tipped over his piledriver. The Kellys Timmy and Thomas had points each to edge Moortown back in front but a goal from Daithi Corrigan on the stroke of halftime meant Eglish led 2-3 to 0-8.
Muldoon and Timmy Kelly swapped points on the restart as did McCarron and Rhys Quinn before O’Mairtin and GHOST PIZZA man of the match Ben McElvaney put the winners three clear. Moortown looked to be in trouble but they responded in the 39th minute with the score of the game as Luke Ryan, Timmy Kelly and Martin were involved in a move that saw the latter smash an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net. Full forward Kelly then converted a free to put Moortown in front only for a fine effort from Shay Donnelly to level matters before Daithi Corrigan edged Eglish into the lead once again. Timmy Kelly levelled matters once more but it was Eglish who finished the stronger of the two teams with points from Corrigan and Donnelly (2) to take the silverware.
