Carrickmore Eire Ôg hopes of making it through to the All Ireland Intermediate final came to an abrupt end on Sunday afternoon at Breffni Park when they were put to the sword by a superb second half display from Mayo champions Tooreen.

It had all begun so well for the Tyrone side with Aidan Kelly’s accuracy from placed balls helping them reach the break leading 0-12 to 0-10. Unfortunately their opponents came out in the second half in determined mood with Shane Boland , Eoin Delaney and Sean Kenny leading the line superbly and by the time the final whistle sounded the Westerners were full value for their 1-28 to 1-17 win.

The first half was a close affair with the teams level on no fewer than ten occasions. Eire Òg had first half points from Francie Hurson, Seamus Sweeney, Aidan Kelly, Conor Grogan and Shea Munroe. Aidan Kelly finished the half with 0-7 as the Tyrone champions reached the break 0-12 to 0-10 in front.

The start of the second half saw Tooreen make a couple of substitutions and several positional switches. They introduced Sean Reagan and Fionn Delaney and pushed Shane Boland higher up the field. That put Eire Óg on the back foot and by the sixth minute of the second half Tooreen were in front as a Sean Kenny point put them ahead.

From then until the end Tooreen produced some excellent hurling and points from Liam Lavin, Shane Boland and Sean Regan put them five points clear. Boland then finished off a fine team move with a goal as the game entered the closing ten minutes.

Tooreen continued to dominate the game and with seven minutes left they led by seven. A Dermy Begley goal reduced the deficit but time ran out for Eire Ó and Tooreen deservedly won 1-28 to 1-17.
