Emphatic Win For Tyrone

Tyrone easily made it six McKenna Cup titles in a row when they defeated Derry in the decider at Pairc Esler in Newry on Saturday evening. Derry led 0-2 to 0-1 after six minutes thanks to points from Emmet McGuckin and Mark Lynch but after that it was all downhill for them.
They didn’t trouble the umpires again until two minutes into the second half from a James Kielt free by which time the holders were in complete control. Ronan O’Neill, Declan McClure, Peter Harte, Mark Bradley and man of the match Mattie Donnelly all notched first half points while midfielder Colm Cavanagh blasted to the net in the 17th minute as they established a 1-7 to 0-2 interval lead.
Conor Meyler and Harte added points either side of that Kielt effort as the one way traffic continued. Ryan Bell had a Derry point but Donnelly replied with a fine effort before Ryan Bell and Niall Sludden exchanged points. Kielt knocked over another free but when O’Neill was fouled for a 58th minute penalty Harte stepped up to confidently tuck it away. Conal McCann had Tyrone’s last score of the game and while Niall Loughlin got a late goal for Derry it was scarcely of consolation value as it finished 2-13 to 1-7.
