Monaghan champions Corduff overcame Killyman St Mary’s at the second time of asking in Sunday’s Ulster junior club contest at Inniskeen, writes Damien Donnelly.
The St Mary’s may well look back at the drawn game in Coalisland seven days previous and feel they could have won that one. Replays can be so different at times and so it proved here despite a bright start by the Tyrone team.
Killyman finished on 13 men and Corduff on 14 with red card dismissals in the last half for Eddie Holland and Paul McVeigh(2nd yellow), Corduff losing Shane McNally jnr on a second yellow.
Enda McGahan landed two points and Mickey Donnelly one as the St Mary’s began sharply inside the first 10 minutes.
Corduff, however, gradually got an increasing grip on proceedings around midfield and other main sectors.
They then enjoyed a purple patch that served up 1-6 without reply before the interval. Brendan McNally(0-3), Keith McEnaney and Raymond Byrne pointed prior to a Keith McEnaney goal and then a Byrne point.
The St Mary’s turned round facing a 1-6 to 0-3 deficit that could have been more but for the intervention of the woodwork and Paddy O’Hagan closing down the angles on another couple of occasions as Corduff bore in on goals.
Chris McEnaney and Mickey Donnelly swapped scores before Pauric Gollogly and Byrne tagged on two more for Corduff.
Declan McAlinden was denied by Corduff keeper Darren Byrne but Donnelly and Ciaran Og Hughes pointed for the spirited St Mary’s.
Gollogly sent over the closing score of the game for Corduff who now meet Donegal opposition in the quarters.
Killyman can still reflect on a fruitful season that yielded the junior championship plus promotion to intermediate football, so still a good year for the St Mary’s.
