Entertaining Intermediate Doubleheader At Healy Parrk.

Friday night’s double header at Healy Park resulted in a hard fought draw between Aghyaran and Moy in the opening game and a hard fought win for Cookstown Fr Rocks over a hard working Drumquin Wolfe Tones side.

Matas Rumsevicius opened the scoring after three minutes for Moy before a pair of Benny Galllen frees put Aghyaran ahead for the first time. A converted free and a superb two pointer from Michael Conroy put Moy two clear but Eoghan Mc Hugh reduced the deficit to one with thirteen first half minutes gone.

Ryan Coleman landed another two pointer for Moy as they moved 0-6 to 0-3 clear before man of the match Diarmuid Mc Hugh(2) and Eoghan Mc Hugh pointed to tie things again.

There was little or nothing between the sides in the first half and even at that stage a draw looked a distinct possibility. Ethan Mc Hugh levelled the scores at 0-6 apiece and then Eoghan Mc Hugh landed a fine two pointer to put the north Tyrone men two clear with five minutes of the first half remaining. A late flurry of points saw scores from Caolan Mc Ginty , Cathaoir Hughes, Michael Conroy and Benny Gallen to send the sides off at the break with Aghyaran leading narrowly 0-10 to 0-9.

Moy began the second half strongly and three early flints from Ryan Coleman, Matas Rumsevicius and Cathaoir Hughes to put their team two in front. The hard working Diarmuid Mc Hugh narrowed the gap for Aghyaran before Conroy made it a two point once again. Mc Hugh and Rumsevicius swapped scores again before Benny Gallen landed three two pointers in a row inside the space of four minutes to put the St Davogs men four clear for the first time 0-18 to 0-14.

As the game entered its final five minutes Michael Conroy made it a three point match with a fine score before reducing the gap further with a superbly struck free kick from distance.. As the game entered added time Moy drew level with a well taken score form the industrious Ryan Coleman. Both sides had chances inside added time to get the win but in the end a draw was a fair result.

Final score: Moy 0-18, Aghyaran 0-18.

The second game of Friday night’s double header was expected to be close and competitive and so it proved before Cookstown’s more potent forwards made possession tell as they ran out deserved winners.

Conall Sheehy got the ball rolling with the opening score before Eoin Ferris levelled things for Drumquin. Man of the match Eoin Long landed the first  two pointer of the night but Drumquin responded with a neat score from Cormac Rodgers and tied the game at 0-3 apiece with another Eoin Ferris point.

A superbly struck forty five from Sean Óg Quinn had Cookstown ahead again and a minute later the lead was doubled when Seamus Glackin finished coolly. Drumquin defender Hugh Gormley narrowed the gap to one before another Eoin Long point put the Fr Rocks 0-6 to 0-4 ahead with twenty first half minutes gone.

There was little between the sides and when Cookstown offered Stephen Gormley the freedom of Healy Park he happily accepted it to finish to the net for the first goal of the game and Drumquin led 1-4 to 0-6 with twenty two minutes on the clock.

A Cathaoir Colton point made it a two point gap before Eoin Long pointed to steady any Cookstown nerves. Drumquin replied with a fine score from Eoin Skelton before a two pointer from Sean Óg Quinn and a point from the boot of Karol Wawrynkiewicz sent the teams off at the break with Cookstown leading 0-10 to 1-6 despite not having played particularly well.

Eoin Long opened the second half scoring but Drumquin replied immediately with an excellent Finnen Patterson point. Two minutes later Drumquin moved three clear with their second goal of the game when the Cookstown defence did a vanishing act and Oisin Gormley showed no mercy to make it 2-8 to 0-11.

In fairness to Cookstown their response was almost immediate as Matthew Mc Neill finished to the net to put his team back in the contest. Karol Wawrynkiewicz fired over to put Cookstown one clear before the same player doubled the lead a minute later and when Eoin Long hit the net for Cookstown’s second goal there was a sense of inevitability about the outcome as they led 2-13 to 2-8.

 

Cookstown pushed on with further  points from Darragh Mc Hugh, Sean Óg Quinn and Eoin Long to wrap up the scoring and seal the result.

Final score: Cookstown 2-17, Drumquin 2-8
