Dungannon Eoghan Ruadh stopped Eire Og Carrickmore’s quest for a three in a row of Benburb Cups following a dramatic end to one of the most exciting and entertaining senior hurling finals in years. The best of the drama was reserved for the closing ten minutes as Eire Og came back from the death to draw the game level three minutes into injury time. However Damian Casey sent over a last gasp winner to ensure the Benburb Cup would be going back to Dungannon for 2012.
There was little between the sides throughout the game with a Gary Fox first half injury time goal ensuring Carrickmore went in ahead at the break 1-5 t0 0-6. Aidan Kelly and Damien Casey displayed nerves of steel for their teams with their unerring accuracy from frees throughout the game. Casey helped Dungannon move three points ahead fifteen minutes into the second half and at that stage it looked like they might pull away from Eire Og. However the Carmen lads made several switches and points from Sean Og and Martin Grogan and a Conor Grogan goal drew the teams level as the clock ticked towards full time.
It was then that the excitement reached fever pitch with goals from Kiefer Morgan, Ryan Mc Kernan and Casey’s late, late match winner. Final score Dungannon Eoghan Ruadh 1-14, Carrickmore Eire Og 2-10.
