2012 champions Errigal Ciaran are through to the semi finals of this year’s Donnelly Vauxhall Senior championship after coming from behind at halftime to beat old rivals Carrickmore at Pomeroy on Sunday evening.

As expected it was a full blooded encounter played in front of a large crowd at Plunkett Park. Padraig McGirr put the winners in front after only twenty seconds but Martin Penrose levelled matters from a free. Cathal McRory then edged Errigal Ciaran back in front before Carrickmore enjoyed a good spell as they rattled off four unanswered points from Conor Gormley (2), Ruairi Loughran and Paul McAleer. Errigal keeper Ronan McAnenly  came to his side’s rescue to make a crucial save from Mark Donnelly as the Carmen forward bore down on goals. McGirr got a much needed Errigal score and that was followed by a Davy Harte free but it was Carrickmore who had the final say of the half from a Penrose placed ball for a 0-6 to 0-4 advantage.

A Penrose free stretched Carrickmore’s lead on the restart but with ten minutes to go the sides were level after two fisted points from man of the match Mark Kavanagh and one from substitute Peter Og McCartan. Kavanagh then hit a beauty from out on the left wing before Carrickmore were dealt a blow when Benny McLaughlin was straight red carded. Ben McDonnell then scored a terrific point from distance and when substitute Tommy Canavan also found the range the winners were three in front. There were seven additional minutes to be played and another Penrose free gave Carrickmore renewed hope. Errigal Ciaran though weren’t to be denied with the outstanding Kavanagh fisting the ball over the bar for a third time to clinch victory on a 0-11 to 0-8 scoreline. Errigal Ciaran await the winner of Tuesday night’s replay between Clonoe and Pomeroy.
