Sunday 10.11.2024
Ulster Club Senior Football Championship Quarter Final
Cargin 0-9 Errigal Ciaran 0-17
Apart from a five minute spell in the opening half Errigal Ciaran totally dominated Cargin in Corrigan Park on Sunday afternoon to book their place in the semi final of the 2024 Ulster Club Senior Football Championship. Errigal had eight points to spare in the end despite not creating a clear cut goal chance throughout the sixty plus minutes of football.
The base for Errigal’s victory came in the opening half and they got off to an excellent start leading 0-3 to no score inside the opening four minutes of action. Two Tommy Canavan frees punishing off the ball holding on Darragh and Ruairi Canavan both of which were well spotted by Monaghan whistler Martin McNally and his officials. Ruairi Canavan clipped over the 3rd point of the game in the 4th minute ahead of five wides in a row from the Tyrone side. It took until the 16th minute for margin to get on the scoreboard. Goalkeeper John McNabb finding space in the Errigal defence to fire over the bar. Errigal responded two minutes later. Ben McDonnell sprinting forward and landing a long range point from play. Two Cargin points, a close range Tomas McCann free and a point from play for Sean O’Neill had Cargin back to within a single point 0-4 to 0-3 by the 21st minute but that was as good as it got from the Antrim men. Errigal Ciaran points via Ben McDonnell and another Tommy Canavan free eased the gap out to three again. Another short range free from Tomas McCann in the 25th minute was Cargin’s final score of the half but Errigal were’t finished. A bullet pass from Ruairi Canavan found Peter Harte who offloaded immediately to Darragh Canavan for the score of the game in the 27th minute. A minute later a slide rule fist pass from Darragh Canavan put the excellent Tiarnan Colhoun through for a fisted point. Both Ruairi and Darragh Canavan were on the scoresheet again before the break. Ruairi converting a free in the 31st minute and Darragh curling over the final score of the half just a few seconds later. Half time Cargin 0-4 Errigal 0-10.
The Tyrone side hit their fifth point in a row two minutes after the restart. Ciaran McGinley picking the ball up and firing over the crossbar. Tomas McCann responded with his third free of the game in the 33rd minute to reduce the gap to six points again but by the midway point in the half Errigal had an eight point lead. Joe Oguz launching over a long range point and Ruairi Canavan finding the range again with another free. The next four points were shared. Cargin’s Tomas McCann splitting the posts from a free and a 45 and Ciaran McGinley scoring from play in the 51st minute ahead of a Ruairi Canavan free in the 60th. Cargin’s corner back Ronan Gribbon was the next man on the scoreboard and that score was cancelled out by substitute Mark Kavanagh two minutes into time added on. The final two score of the contest came with a Tomas McCann point from play and an excellently judged Ronan McCrory point from the left wing. Enda McGinley’s men marching on into the last four of the Ulster series. Final Score – Cargin 0-9 Errigal Ciaran 0-17.
Referee – Martin McNally (Monaghan)
