Errigal Ciaran made the perfect early start to their Ulster Club campaign on Sunday against Donegal champions Termon when they won a penalty inside the first minute. The spot kick, which was one of five awarded on the day, was superbly converted by player of the match Maria Canavan.

The Donegal champions found Errigal’s pace and power difficult to live with but they didn’t help themselves losing players at key times of the game to sin bin infractions. The loss of Jodie Mc Fadden, Anna Gallagher and Rosin Friel over the hour to yellow cards, the first two in the first half, impacted on their performance. On a day when Canavan, top scorer in the Tyrone championship, hit 3-8 it was always going to be a tough day for the visitors.

Only at times did Termon display their ability but they should have been level with a penalty from Ciara Mc Garvey at the end of the first quarter. Unfortunately for the Donegal girls it found its way over the bar. They also missed a great opportunity to close the gap further when, on the half time whistle. Nicole Mc Laughlin fired wide of the Errigal goal.

Errigal had controlled the opening half and at times they were camped in the Termon half and found themselves nine points up by the short whistle. Canavan scoring an early penalty and a further 1-5 before the Emilie Loughran with her sides other first half score.

Termon worked hard to get a grip of things and get themselves back into the game. Shannon Mc Laughlin’s point six minutes in closed the gap to three points but through the half they relied on mistakes from Errigal rather than breaking the line themselves. Mc Garvey finishing the half with the other points as they went in at the break trail 2-6 to 0-3.

A penalty for Termon on the restart gave them hope after Friel was fouled but Roisin Mc Cafferty’s well struck kick went to the wrong side of the post robbing Termon of further confidence.

Errigal continued to play at high intensity and kept the scoreboard ticking over going 3-9 to 0-4 clear when Canavan scored a third goal with ten minutes remaining on the clock. A goal from Mc Fadden on the run and a late penalty from the same player on the stroke of full time put something of a gloss on the Termon showing. As for the Tyrone champions they can now look forward to another homer fixture this time against Down champions Bredagh.
