Errigal Ciaran lifted their first senior title in five years following a two point win over a highly fancied Carrickmore side this evening at Augher on a score line of 0-13 to 0-11. Mind you the win looked far from likely with thirty minutes of the first half played as Carrickmore led 0-6 to 0-2 following a fine point from Sinead Mc Aleer/O’Neill. At that stage Carrickmore appeared to have weathered the Errigal storm following three fine saves by goalkeeper Claire Donnelly and some assured free taking by star forward Gemma Begley. However Errigal staged something of a comeback and during the seven minutes of additional time they managed to narrow the gap to a single point following points from Sarah Connolly and Lycrecia Quinn.
Errigal began the second half strongly with points from Quinn and Connolly and one from the elusive Aine Canavan as the eventual winners went ahead for the first time. Canavan extended her side’s lead ten minutes in and Carrickmore were struggling to cope with the pace and drive of Tiffy Quinn’s side. When the game entered the final quarter however Carmen awoke from their slumber and scores from Mc Aleer/O’Neill and Begley reduced the gap to the minimum. As the quality of football and intensity of exchanges rose Selina Oguz picked up a yellow card and the pressure on Errigal went up a notch or two. However they managed to break up the field and with young Cailin Mc Cann proving difficult to handle they extended their lead through Claire Rafferty and Sarah Connolly.
The closing fourteen or so minutes were laced with tension and drama as Carmen set about chasing the game. The piled forward in numbers but could not breach the Errigal rearguard and in spite of two late Begley scores the Dunmoyle girls held on to win the title amid scenes of wild celebration.
Both teams deserve great credit for the game they served up this evening. The match was watched by a huge crowd who backed both teams right to the end. Credit also to the Augher club for the way they handled the game at short notice.
