Tonight’s Hunky Dorys Intermediate Championship quarter final replay between Strabane and Eskra turned out to be a real humdinger that saw a stunning Eskra comeback put paid to Strabane’s hopes of championship glory. The Sigersons will be wondering just how they failed to win this one having dominated the play for long periods after a brace of points from John Mc Laughlin put them eight points to two in front midway through the second half.
Eskra opted to play with the breeze in the first half but with Michael Etherstone and Marc Devine in fine form it was Strabane that looked the side most likely as they built up a 0-4 to 0-1 lead at the break.
The North Tyrone side began the second half in dominant form with fine points from Etherstone again and Warner Mullan helping them to establish a five point lead. It was not looking good for Eskra at this stage but they made several substitutions and switches and showed great character to give themselves a chance when Joe Mc Carroll found the net in the forty sixth minute.
That score gave Eskra hope and they threw caution the wind in search of victory. Niall Mc Ginn, Peter Hughes, Cormac Arkinson, Joe Mc Carroll and Cormac Arkinson began to find gaps in the Strabane defence and points from Hughes and Eoin Mc Caffrey narrowed the gap to two with six minutes remaining.
The Emmetts had momentum with them and as the game entered the closing couple of minutes it was turned on its head when wing back Cathal Mc Caffrey’s speculative effort slipped through the hands of Strabane custodian Connor Mc Grath.
Strabane found themselves behind for the first time in the game but with time running out they failed to create any further chances and Eskra held on to win by a point on a final score of 2-4 to 0-9. The Emmetts will now face Rock on Friday night with a place in the Intermediate final the incentive for the winners.
