After a dramatic encounter, in Stewartstown, which required extra time to decide the outcome. Coalisland returned to senior football next season at the expense of Pomeroy.
For long periods in the contest it looked like the Plunketts would maintain their status but a flurry of scores at the end of the second half of normal time forced extra time. The Fianna then replicated the finish to grab victory.
Four two pointers in the opening half courtesy of Ryan Loughran and Ronan Duffin illustrated the strength of the breeze as Pomeroy led 0-10 0-3, at the break.
A Niall Devlin two point score within the first twenty seconds of the restart seemed to indicate that Coalisland would breach the deficit quickly, but that wasn’t the case. They struggled in front of posts, leaving several shots short and racked up half a dozen wides.
Frank Burns extended Pomeroy’s lead, before substitute Sean L Corr got the Fianna ‘s second score of the half 23 minutes following Devlin’s effort. A fisted point from Peter Herron, and a two point free, from Corr left two, between them, in the final minute of regulation time. Six minutes were added and nerves which played a part throughout became more obvious. Pomeroy were careless in possession and Coalisland pressed forward. Ronan Duffin looked like he had sealed victory with a 64th minute point but a huge two pointer from the recently introduced Michael McKernan and a point from Peter Herron deep into injury time forced extra time.
The heavens opened but despite playing against the breeze which now wasn’t as significant Pomeroy led 0-14 0-13 as the teams turned around. Points from Tiernan Quinn and McKernan edged the Fianna back in front but Ryan McCallan converted a two point free to regain the lead.
Coalisland still trailed as a McHugh effort looked like it was dealt with by the keeper with two minutes remaining but the ball broke to Ruairi Campbell who made no mistake. Late scores from Corr and Quinn confirmed promotion.
