If Glenelly are to progress any further in this year’s Tyrone Junior Football championship they will want to forget what was a lack lustre performance against a very spirited Urney side in Gorton this afternoon. The St Joseph’s men had just a single point to spare over their north Tyrone opponents who looked like they might well force a replay.
Glenelly jumped out to a 0-5 to 0-0 lead inside 13 minutes thanks to four Lorcan McCullagh points (3 frees) and Cormac McBride point in the 10th minute. Within three minutes the Urney men were back to within a single point following a Ryan Henry free in the 14th minute and a superbly taken Danny Doherty goal three minutes later. A Ronan O’Kane point from a free in the 22nd minute steadied Glenelly nerves and a fifth point from Lorcan McCullagh in the 22nd minute eased Glenelly out to a three point margin.
Urney outscored the Glenelly men 0-3 to 0-1 in the closing 11 minutes of the opening half thanks to point from Kyle Henry, Ryan Henry and an excellent 45 converted by goalkeeper Keith Nelis. Glenelly’s only point in that period coming from wing half back Eoghan McConnell. Half time score : Glenelly 0-8 Urney 1-4.
Urney who finished 13 places and 23 points behind Glenelly in the league shrugged off the underdogs baggage and took the lead within four minutes of the restart. Kyle and Ryan Henry firing over points from play. That stung the Glenelly men and they hit the next four scores through Ryan O’Kane (2 frees) and a brace of points from Lorcan McCullagh (1 free). Back came Urney with three points of their own. Ryan Henry hitting a free and a point from play followed by a Danny Doherty point from play to level the contest with five minutes of normal time left.
Urney failed to score from play from that stage to the end of the game. Two Ryan Henry frees cancelled out by three Glenelly points from play through Cormac McBride, Cathal O’Neill and man of the match Lorcan McCullagh who finished with 0-8.
