Ulster Minor Gold Final

Tyrone 8-4  Monaghan 4-12

Eight goals, seven from Carrickmore’s Sorcha Gormley helped steer Tyrone to the Ulster Gold minor title on Saturday. A special performance from the Tyrone Captain and although far from 100% fit she put in a remarkable display, but the Red Hand girls did not have it all their own way as Monaghan staged a great comeback through the second half.

Four points separated the sides at the end with some fine scores from Donnelly and Maguire with great work from international athlete Kiernan who came off the bench and ran at Tyrone. While at one end Gormley starred at the other Tori Mc Mullan, Emily Conlan, Emma Mc Crossan and Cara Mc Counfry were excellent while Ella Mc Caffrey was very assured in goal.

Monaghan took a three point lead early on Alison Gilliland and a double from Aimee Donnelly got them on the board before a hat trick of Gormley goals in two minutes. The goals  all involved quality finishing by taking on defenders in the process,  Sheehy, Donaghy and Moohan were all involved.

Moohan scored the  fourth and Gormley added a further 2-1 before the break,. Aine Maguire punished  a poor Tyrone clearance with a goal of her own but they trailed by nine.

Monaghan powered back after the break and with Tyrone only scoring two points they were in trouble. The Farney side added several points and a big goal from Donaghy that closed it to a four point game. Moohan was fouled and got a penalty that was netted by Gormley to help hold off the Monaghan challenge and while Donaghy got her second goal Tyrone maintained the pressure, keeping their noses in front.

Gormley wrapped up a memorable day with her seventh goal when after missing a free she intercepted the goal kick with four minutes left as Tyrone  deservedly claimed the title

Tyrone Scorers: Sorcha Gormley 7-2, Catherine Moohan 1-0, Nicole Donaghy 0-1, Amy Sheehy 0-1
