Gortin got the better of Galbally at Healy Park tonight under lights but were made battle all the way before edging a very tight low scoring game by two points 0-8 to 0-6. The Pearses were forced into four changes from the side that lined out against Gortin in the first game including starting without key men Paul Rafferty and county star Micky Murphy. However in spite of these absences Galbally produced some fine first half football and led 0-3 to 0-1 after the opening fifteen minutes. Their defensive system was proving very effective and restricted the impact and influence of Diarmuid Mc Nulty and Kevin Mossey with Martin Brannigan and Terry Donnelly superb throughout.
As the half progressed Shane Clarke began to dominate around the break ball area and points from Mc Nulty and Mossey sent the St Patrick’s in at the break leading 0-4 to 0-3. Galbally refused to throw in the towel and with Damien Mc Crory driving them forward at every opportunity they entered the final ten minutes level at 0-6 apiece. The underdogs were off target from a few frees while Kevin Mossey landed two fine scores to edge his team 0-8 to 0-6 in front. Galbally went for broke and threw on injured duo Paul Rafferty and Micky Murphy in an effort to save the game but in spite of a gallant effort they could not close the gap and Gortin held on to deservedly win by two. The St Patrick’s now go forward to face Eskra in the semi final.
