Gortin and Moortown met in their replayed first round intermediate championship game on Thursday evening at the superb Pairc Eoghan Ruadh in Dungannon and served up a highly entertaining game that went right down to the wire. With only a single point separating the teams a last minute Moortown 45 dropped short and Gortin held on to edge it 1-11 to 1-10.

The Glensmen began well and early points from Niall Mc Ginn and Peter Clarke gave them the perfect start. Brian Mc Lennon opened Moortown’s account from a free but scores from Peter Keenan, Brian Mc Garvey and Sean Óg Mc Aleer put their side four in front. However Moortown began to enjoy more possession and with that came the scores.

Full forward Peter Devlin, who was a handful all night, hit two while Conor Herron and Lee Kelly converted a brace of fine chances to narrow the gap to one. Gortin halted their opponents scoring run just before the break with a Peter Clarke point to send Gortin in at half time leading 0-6 to 0-5.

The large crowd assembled were certainly enjoying the game as neither team held back with some big hits all over the field. Several goal scoring chances were created by both teams and spurned but three minutes after the restart Sean Mc Kenna eventually found the net for Gortin after some fine play from Laurence Hollywood.

Over the course of the next fifteen minutes, with Ruairi Keenan and Brian Mc Garvey bossing the middle third, Gortin controlled the game and added three further points to their tally to leave them 1-9 to 0-6 in front with only a little over ten minutes remaining. Peter Keenan, Brian Mc Garvey and Sean Óg Mc Aleer with the scores that looked to have ensured the win for their side.

Moortown responded well however and the introduction of Tarlach Quinn seemed to spark them into life. Ryan Kelly converted two frees before Ruairi Keenan sent over a superb point for the winners. Brian Mc Lernon narrowed the gap again but once more Gortin bounced back with a Peter Keenan free to leave four between the teams as the ref’s watch ticked towards additional time.

Moortown pushed everyone forward in search of scores and their bravery was rewarded when Brian Mc Lernon pounced on a chance and found the net. Now there was only two points between the teams and still three minutes left.

Moortown created a couple of other half chances of goals and almost snatched it when one of them was superbly blocked out for a 45 by the outstanding Fiachra Mc Nulty. The resultant 45 was played short and the chance converted by Ryan Kelly to leave it a one point game.

Once more Moortown pushed men right into the goal area in the hope of taking the game to extra time. As the ball sailed high into the square the safe hands of Brian Mc Garvey took the catch and with it the game for Gortin.

Final score : Gortin 1-11, Moortown 1-10
