Gortin Gears Up For St. Patrick’s Day Cycle

Excitement is growing for the St Patrick’s Day Charity Cycle taking place in Gortin on Sunday 17th March 2013. Consisting of a 60 mile, 30 mile and 10 mile fun-run, cyclists of all ages and abilities are gearing up for this fundraising event organised by Gortin St. Patrick’s GAC, which is also supporting for NI Cancer Fund for Children. All cyclists are welcome to join the event which begins at the Owenkillew Community Centre with registration for the 60 mile challenge at 8am. This route will take cyclists to Cookstown before facing the test of the Draperstown and Glenelly hills, and then heading back to Gortin for a St Patrick’s Day reception. The 30 mile event registration takes place at 9am, followed by the 10 mile at 11am.

The new 2013 Gortin Gold Rush event jersey will be revealed tonight (Thursday 14th March) at the Owenkillew Community Centre where it is being distributed to the 160 sponsored cyclists who have already registered to take part. The jersey is produced in the blue and golden yellow of Gortin, and is filled with the logos of over 28 local companies. Given pride of place on the chest of the jersey is the yellow flower of the NI Cancer Fund for Children, which is next to main sponsor VA Generators.

Gortin St. Patrick’s Club Chairman Gabriel Treanor explained, “The generosity of our local business has been key to getting the event off the ground and allowed the club to purchase the jerseys for our sponsored cyclists. We can’t thank our sponsors enough as we know that these are challenging times, particularly for small businesses. That makes their contribution even more valuable to us and we will put all funds raised to good use. Last years event allowed us to donate £3,600 to NI Cancer Fund for Children, as well as invest in some badly needed improvements to our facilities. We would be delighted to reach this level of success again this year, so here’s hoping for a great day with good cycling weather”.
