Tyrone Star Justin McMahon braved the wintry weather to show his support for the return of Gortin’s Charity Cycle for 2013. Gortin St Patrick’s GAA Club has announced that, back by popular demand, is their St Patrick’s Day Charity Cycle. The cycle was held for the first time in 2012, and proved to be a fantastic local event attracting both young and not so young to face the challenges of the Sperrin Mountains. The aptly named St Patrick’s Gortin Gold Rush will take place on Sunday 17th March 2013. This club fundraising event is also set to raise funds once again for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children, a charity that has been a great support for two local Gortin families who have children recovering from Leukaemia.

St Patrick’s Gortin Gold Rush will take the same format as 2012 with 3 events for cyclists to choose from; a 60 mile, 30 mile and 10 mile fun cycle through some of the best scenery that the county has to offer. The registration night for participants to collect their sponsorship card will be held in the Owenkillew Community Centre on Friday 1st February beginning at 7PM.

Club Chairman Gabriel Treanor explained, ‘Last year’s cycle proved to be a great success when 300 people of all cycling abilities got involved, and the local community rallied behind the event. We had experienced cyclist as well as novices; – grandparents, parents and children all taking part in the cycling. And those who didn’t cycle were bringing refreshments to the cyclists, taking registration, marshalling, providing escort and support vehicles, and afterwards they were serving Irish stew and pints of Guinness. This made for a fantastic community event. We also had 28 sponsors who we are very grateful to as they contributed to the running costs for the event. We are going to work hard to repeat the success of last year and to make this even better in 2013. Our GAA club, Northern Ireland Cancer Fund and our local community deserve it’.

Justin McMahon commended Gortin GAC for their organisation of St Patrick’s Gortin Gold Rush. He said, ‘I heard about the Gortin Cycle last year and it was really well supported by cyclists from many local clubs in Omagh, Greencastle, Glenelly, Kildress, Carrickmore and Newtownstewart. I think that the experienced cyclists found the hills and valleys of the Sperrins a bit of a challenge, but it’s great to be put to the test and I know that many relish the prospect of beating their time from last year. The main thing is, that it’s all for a good cause.’

Speaking on behalf of Northern Ireland Concern Fund for Children (NICFC), Dawn Weir said, ‘NICFC are absolutely delighted that Gortin GAA have selected us a beneficiary for their cycle again in 2013. The amount they raised last year was fantastic and it will help us to offer much needed support to families whose lives have been affected by cancer. NICFC very much look forward to the 2013 event’.
