Gortin Five Launched

The excitement is building for the inaugural Gortin 5 Mile Road Race and 5 km walk and run on Saturday 27th April. Hundreds of runners and walkers are expected to descend on the beautiful village of Gortin to take part in the event.

Both races start at 11:00 am from the entrance of St. Patrick’s Primary School and will finish at the entrance to the Owenkilllew Community Centre. The fully chipped timed race will include a 5-mile course for the more competitive runner and a 5 km alternative for those interested in a more relaxed day out.

The races will follow a fast flat course surrounded by the scenic hills and valleys of the Sperrins. The race committee and local community are incredibly excited to welcome runners of all levels to the race on what promises to be an enjoyable event for all involved.

Race committee member and avid runner, Steve Turner said “We are looking forward to welcoming all runners to the “Gortin Five”. The fast flat course will offer the opportunity for PBs and enjoyment for the more casual runner. The local community and businesses are very much anticipating a great day for our local village”.

“It has taken a real cohesive effort to initiate this race and we hope that it will become an annual fixture within the Athletics calendar. The run this year takes place a week before the Belfast Marathon and offers a perfect opportunity for runners to stretch their legs in preparation for that event”.

“Our committee has been working hard behind the scenes and all runners can be assured of a good spread of refreshments after the race with a BBQ available for all competitors. We would like to thank all our sponsors who have supported this event. With a special word of thanks to our main sponsor Omexom”.

Entry fee for the 5-mile run is £12 and £8 for the 5 km, which includes chip timing. The first 200 registered runners in the 5-mile event will receive a race t-shirt while the 5 km finishers will receive a medal.

All competitors are encouraged to register early at www.coretiming.ie
