Pre game favourites Gortin came unstuck this evening in Omagh when they lost to a very determined and well drilled Eskra side who won largely due to two fortuitous goals. Their opening goal came eighteen minutes into the first half when midfielder Rory Marlowe’s speculative effort deceived Mc Cullagh in the Gortin goals and ended up in the net. That goal allowed Eskra to go in at the break four in front as Niall Mc Ginn and Paul Marlowe marshalled the twin threat of Kevin Mossey and Diarmuid Mc Nulty. However the Gortin duo improved considerably during the second half as did the rest of their team and when Peter Keenan put them ahead twenty one minutes into the second half they seemed to be on the road to the final. However Eskra refused to surrender and driven on by Cormac Arkinson and Adrian Scullion they got the rub of the green when a high ball into the square was declared a goal by the umpire. There followed a few moments on dispute before referee Martin Mohan, who had a great game throughout signalled a goal.
Gortin continued to battle right to the end and Paddy Northern had a great chance to draw the sides level but blasted over the bar with only a minute left on the clock. That was Gortin’s last and best chance of a goal and Eskra deservedly held on to win and make it through to the Power NI Intermediate final. They will face the winners of tomorrow’s second semi final between Cookstown and Rock. final score Eskra 2-9, Gortin 0-13.
