Gortin St Patrick’s GAA Club is holding its first annual charity cycle on St Patrick’s Day, 17th March 2012. The event, aptly named St Patrick’s Gortin Gold Rush, was launched on Friday evening by Tyrone County Star Stephen O’Neill. This club fundraiser is also set to raise funds for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children, a charity that is currently supporting two local Gortin families who have children recovering from Leukemia.

The Charity Cycle will present an opportunity for cyclists of all abilities to take part – from regular cyclists looking for a fresh challenge – to enthusiastic beginners happy to try an alternative form of exercise. There will be 3 events to choose from; a 60 mile, 30 mile and a 10 mile fun event through the scenic Gortin countryside. A registration night for entrants to collect their sponsorship card will be held in the Community Centre on Friday 10th February at 7PM.

Speaking at the event launch, Stephen O Neill said, “The Gortin Gold Rush should be a great addition to the annual cycling calendar as I know how testing the hills and valleys of the 60 mile event can be. I am really glad to be involved, particularly as some of money raised will support the NI Cancer Fund for Children. I taught in the local school and know both children and anything I can do to show my support, I am very pleased to do.”

The St Patrick’s Gortin Gold Rush is already a big talking point in the Gortin area. Club Chairman Gabriel Treanor told us “We are making a big effort this year to up our game – both on and off the field. Every club needs funds, and even more so when you have set your sights on success. This Cycling Event will get things off to a good start for Gortin GAC in 2012. It’s great to see the support that we already have – even before the launch. Already, we have a full list of sponsors and every corner that I turn on the road, I meet someone out practising on their new bike. It’s great. But what we now need is for everyone capable of riding a bike, to take it out of the shed and to collect a sponsorship card on Friday 10th February. It will be a great day’s craic, and we can mark the success with a pint of Guinness.”
