U14 Grade 4 Championship Final 2012: An Goirtin V Gleann Eallaigh

The Grade 4 Championship U14 Final saw League Winners An Goirtin Naomh Padraig take on neighbouring rivals Gleann Eallaigh this afternoon in perfect weather conditions in Castlederg.

The result left no doubt that Gortin have some formidable talent in this age group with a score of 4-14 to 1-5 against a promising Glenelly side.

The now double champions got off to a perfect start with points from full forward Shane O’Neill and mid fielder Dean Crawford. Shane O’Neill’s score set the scene for things to come as he quickly followed up with a goal and a point putting in a fantastic performance which saw him notch up a game total of 3 goals and 4 points. After a couple of wides, Glenelly responded with a point.

The young Glenelly side found it difficult to penetrate the solid Gortin defence with Peter Bradley and Oisin McNulty on the flanks and Seamus Cassidy holding the middle. They did manage to create a goal opportunity which was stopped on the line by goalkeeper Ruairi O’Neill who put in another flawless performance.

The Gortin response before half time saw running half back Ciaran Brolley take two great scores following an exhibition of teamwork where the partnership with team captain Patrick McCullagh has been one of the key developments in this young squad this season.

Glenelly fought back with a surge before half time but were once again foiled by the relentless defensive efforts of mid-fielder Shay Devine and the hardworking Conal O’Neill. Mid-field partner Dean Crawford scored the point of the game with a long range effort hit from close to the sideline.

The first half closed 1:7 to 0:2 after a good score from the lively Glenelly full forward Aodhan McConnell, before Oisin McNulty finished off another attacking run.

The second half began with another Shane O’Neill goal created expertly by Sean Og McAleer whose precision passing set up the majority of scores for Gortin. The young Glenelly side fought back again and hit a point. However Gortin continued to dominate and the next attack saw Sean Og Mc Aleer finishing with a goal, following swiftly by a point. Successive points from C. Brolley, S. O’Neill and captain P McCullagh, followed by 2 clever fisted scores from S. McAleer and a Glenelly goal from Darren Sheerin brought the final score to 4:14 to 1:5.

The runners up battled throughout in spite of being overrun at times with Fergus O’Neill, Dylan Mc Manus, Cormac Mc Bride, Michael Mc Mullan and Aodhan Mc Connell prominent in most of their best work.
