Last Saturday and Sunday (20 & 21 August 2022) saw 32 teams descend upon Gortin for the return of their annual underage tournaments. These tournaments are held in memory of esteemed club men, part of the club’s proud history, in what is a big year for Gortin, celebrating 50 years since it reformed in 1972.
The U7.5 tournament held in memory of Mick (Francie) McCullagh was won by Kildress, with Gortin winning the shield. In a repeat outcome, the U9.5 tournament in memory of Jack McConnell was won by Kildress, with Gortin winning the shield. The U11.5 tournament held in memory of Dr Sean Muldoon was dominated by Derry teams with the cup won by Foreglen, and Claudy winning the shield.
A feast of football over the weekend, which was made possible by the participation of 16 different clubs, bringing 32 teams, in addition to all the volunteers, parents and coaches helping behind the scenes to organise, referee and provide refreshments – Well done to everyone!
As part of the clubs’ celebrations to recognise 50 years since the reformation of the current club, the blitz on Saturday morning was followed by a Family Fun Day, with loads of games and activities for children of all ages.
The 50th celebrations will culminate on Saturday 5th November, with a Black Tie Gala in the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran. Anyone with a connection to the club, past or present, is invited to attend the Gala, with tickets still on sale until end of September. Contact Cathal McCullagh, Patrick McCullagh or Cormac Bradley to get your ticket ordered.
