Stewartstown 4-20 Brackaville 6-12

Stewartstown lifted the grade 4 minor championship title for 2020 but what a battle they got against neighbours Brackaville in an unforgettable encounter at Moortown on Saturday afternoon that required extra time to decide.

The young Harps were deserving winners on the day but they would be first to admit that they had to go to the well on numerous occasions before finally edging past a dogged Brackaville side who refused to throw in the towel even when they looked to have been beaten.

The winners were out of the blocks quickly and by the 10th minute they had established a 1-5 to 0-1 lead with points from Eoghan O’Donnell, Fiachra Coyle and a Theo Lowe couple with a goal from the latter as well. A goal from Ronan McHugh got the Roes up and running and after Kyle O’Hagan and McHugh tagged on points it was game on. Sean Gallagher got in for a well taken Stewartstown goal but then Fionnan Salmon raised a green flag at the other end of the field to leave it 2-9 to 2-6 at the break to the winners.

James Nugent and Lowe traded early second half points with Oisin Brady and McHugh before a goal from Jake Dillon left just the minimum between the two sides going into the last quarter. Lowe and O’Donnell had points for the Harps either side of a Gallagher goal and with just five to play it looked all over. Brackaville though refused to be beaten and despite having a player sent off 1-2 from McHugh set up a tense finale. Deep into injury time a goal from O’Hagan put Brackaville in front but Lowe held his nerve to convert a free and force extra time as it finished 3-16 to 5-10.

McHugh and O’Donnell exchanged early points in extra time before Lowe got in for a crucial goal. The scores continued to flow and Stewartstown managed to hold on despite McHugh completing his hat trick. It was a great game of football between two well drilled sides with Theo Lowe and Ronan McHugh deserving of special mention having scored 2-9 and 3-8 respectively for their sides.
