Great Results For Hurling And Ladies Football
Congratulations are due this week to our hurlers and our lady footballers following their fantastic wins on Saturday. The hurlers have been performing heroics at times this season and gave a very good Derry side a fair game of it in the Ulster Championship last weekend. Their league campaign earlier in the season was also worthy of note but it was in The Lory Meagher Cup competition that their real hopes of success lay. A difficult away trip to Warwickshire was their semi final reward with the prize of a final at Croke Park on offer for the winners. The Red Hands produced a very solid team performance to ensure that they not only qualified for the final but gave hurling in the county a serious shot in the arm at a time when there are big plans for the continued development of the game.
While the task facing our hurlers was seen as a challenge the task of stopping Donegal’s seemingly inevitable march to another Ulster title was what confronted Tyrone’s minor ladies team on Saturday. Pius Fox and his team went into this game as underdogs with Donegal hot favourites to make it three minor titles in a row. However the Tyrone girls obviously forgot to read the script as they secured a heroic but well deserved two point victory over their great rivals. How often has it been said in changing rooms and on pitches up and down the country to play to the last whistle. Well that is exactly what the Red Hands did as Terri Mc Cusker and Cara Mc Crossan combined to get the lead score for Tyrone with time almost up. The psychological effect of going ahead late in the game was important but what was vital to the victory was Tyrone’s unwillingness to give up and that ultimately saw them crowned Ulster Minor Champions for 2011.
Well done to both sets of players and management and let’s hope these wins are indicators of further successes to come later in the Summer at both minor and senior level.
