Green Green Grass But No Sign Of Home For Some.

A rather unusual sight revealed itself the other morning when I woke to find that the promised thaw had really taken hold and after what seemed like weeks of frozen trees and snow covered gardens the sight of green grass was a welcome one indeed. The difference in temperature between Christmas Eve and the twenty eighth of December was almost twenty five degrees and for the first time ever a temperature of ten degrees Celsius felt like ideal weather for shorts and tee shirts. From the point of view of GAA activity the planners and fixture makers will be hoping for a prolonged spell of reasonable weather that will enable them to complete the series of games that had to be postponed during December. There are several schools games and under twenty one club championship matches still to be played not to mention Omagh St. Endas Ladies All Ireland Final replay plus the Tyrone Vocationals Team game against Monaghan. With The Mc Kenna Cup also due to get underway it already looks like being a very busy start to 2011.

In addition to the fixtures of course there is a series of trials planned for the Tyrone Ladies senior panel for the incoming year and according to my sources it is hoped that the first of these will take place this weekend. However we are awaiting confirmation of this but Youth Sport Omagh looks like being the venue.

The weather also threw a major spanner in the works for the Tyrone minor manager Mickey Donnelly as his plans for a pre Christmas get together for his panel had to be put on hold. Fortunately thanks to the recent thaw the Aghaloo man has succeeded in making arrangements to meet with his panel and will now be looking forward to preparing for this year’s Ulster Minor League as Tyrone attempt to defend their Ulster and All Ireland titles.

While many of us were relaxing with friends and family members of the Irish Handball team were facing all sorts of difficulties as they headed west to San Diego. Frozen roads, heavy snow and chaos at the airports caused major problems for the travellers and at one stage it was feared that some would not travel at all. We hope to bring you details of results and successes as soon as the competition is complete.
