Greencastle 2-12 Stewartstown 0-9

Greencastle will play Aghaloo in the quarter finals of the LCC Intermediate championship after they finished their first round encounter in style against Stewartstown at Galbally on Saturday afternoon.

There was little between the sides throughout and in fact the winners never took the lead until the 45th minute when defender Barry McGarvey grabbed their first goal. That was the catalyst for them to take control as that goal overturned a two point deficit and they went on to hold their opponents scoreless for the remainder of the contest. Stewartown led by two points early on with Dylan McElhatton and Gareth Devlin among their scorers.  Mark Carson and Cahir McCullagh had Greencastle points with Macaulay Quinn and Anton Coyle on target for Stewartstown and it was no surprise that it was tied at 0-6 apiece at the break.

Three of the first four points of the second half went the way of the Harps courtesy of Quinn, Coyle and Shea O’Neill but that proved to be the last time that they would trouble the scoreboard. The hard working McGarvey pounced for that crucial goal and after Carson and Pete Teague had added points a Sean Fox goal in the 55th minute ended any hopes of a Harps comeback. Stewartstown had both Dylan McElhatton and Gerard O’Neill sent off as they made a disappointing exit from the championship while Greencastle advance to that mouth-watering last eight tie with Aghaloo.

Greencastle scorers – Cahir McCullagh 0-4 (3F), Mark Carson 0-4 (1F, 1 “45”), Sean Fox 1-1, Barry McGarvey 1-0, Pete Teague 0-1, Patrick McElhatton 0-1, Sean Coneelly 0-1

Stewartstown scorers – Macauley Quinn 0-2, Anton Coyle 0-2 (1F), Cathal Devlin 0-2 (1F), Shea O’Neill 0-1, Gareth Devlin 0-1 (1F), Dylan McElhatton 0-1

Referee – Brian McCallion, Castlederg
