Greencastle Grab Late Late Goal to Win
Friday 06.09.2019
Greencastle 4-7 Clogher 1-14
The LCC Intermediate championship clash between Greencastle and Clogher had a dramatic finish at Healy Park on Friday night with three goals and a sending off coming in injury time as the St.Patricks advanced to the last eight.
Greencastle led 2-4 to 0-8 at the end of an entertaining opening half. The St.Patricks opened the scoring in the 4thminute with a point from Cahir McCullagh but then the Eire Ogs enjoyed a purple patch. Wing half back Jamie Callaghan landed a brace of points either side of efforts from Conor Shields and Barry McKenna to leave it 0-4 to 0-1 with a dozen minutes gone on the clock.
A free from McCullagh stopped the rot for Greencastle and at the end of the opening quarter they grabbed their first goal when team Captain Conor Carson fired to the net with the ball taking a deflection off a Clogher defender. Fergal McKenna converted a Clogher free but it was Greencastle who now had the bit between their teeth.
McCullagh showed great strength to burst through the Clogher defence only to be denied by a fine save from keeper Rory McElroy. Dan Tuohey had a Greencastle point before Peter Teague got their second goal in the 21stminute. Sean Og McCann tagged on a point to leave Greencastle well in control. Clogher though ended the first half on top with a Shields brace and one from Mark Bogue.
Callaghan opened the second half scoring after twenty seconds and after keeper McElroy had converted a “45” to level matters Callaghan put Clogher in front. McCullagh then ended a twenty four minute barren spell for the winners with an outstanding point from distance. Sean McCaffrey and McCullagh traded points before Aaron Donnelly got a third Greencastle goal two minutes into injury time.
The drama though was far from finished with Callaghan first timing the ball to the net to level matters. Greencastle then had Dan Tuohey sent off before a Ryan McCaughey free edged Clogher in front with what looked like being the winner. Greencastle though had other ideas and right at the end a high ball in from Gavin Slane was palmed to the net by Conor Carson for a dramatic finale.
