The second game of Saturday’s double header in Loughmacrory between neighbours Greencastle St Patrick’s and Beragh Red Knights produced a thriller that went right down to the last seconds before Greencastle edged it narrowly with a Sean Óg Teague point late in injury time. The result was tough on a Beragh side that had fought their way back from being 1-14 to 1-9 down late in the game to draw level and then lose to a late, late winner right at the end.

Greencastle began well with Mark Carson’s accuracy from placed balls putting them 0-6 to 0-1 ahead after twelve minutes while Beragh had managed a single point from the boot of Marty Rodgers. Beragh slowly worked their way into the game and points from Cathal Owens, Ben Mc Sorley and Conor Owens had the Red Knights behind by two .

Once again Mark Carson’s accuracy from off the floor and a two pointer from John Mc Cullagh edged Greencastle five clear. Beragh refused to panic and a fine Conor Owens point from distance closed the gap to four. However Greencastle were winning things around midfield with Enda Clarke dominating the aerial contests and providing decent possession for his team mates.

With John Mc Cullagh causing havoc in the Beragh rearguard and Greencastle edged five clear once more with the clock ticking down to the short whistle. Unfortunately for them they were caught napping just before the break when Cathal Farley found the net for Beragh to send his team in at the break 0-10 to 1-5 behind.

The second half was competitive and physical as both sides fought for every ball.  Sean Warnock opened the scoring after five second half minutes but points from Marty Rodgers and Cathal Farley helped keep Beragh in the contest.

A fine move from Beragh saw Ben Mc Sorley in space midway through the second half. A goal seemed the most likely option but Shaun O’Boyle in the Greencastle goal threw himself across the square and turned the shot around the post.

The game became quite a physical contest with Beragh pushing hard to create chances but finding the resolute Greencastle defence in uncompromising mood. Sean Warnock and Dan Mc Kenna swapped points before a superb run and finish from Ryan Gumley with six minutes remaining seemed to have won it for the Castle. Leading by five surely there was no way back for Beragh?

However Conor Owens and Cathal Farley fired over points to reduce the gap to three and when team captain Cathal Owens fired to the net with time almost up Beragh found themselves level. The stand erupted and every Beragh supporter in the crowd celebrated what seemed like a win.

However there was still time for one more twist as Sean Warnock drove his team forward from the restart and set up substitute Sean Óg Teague to fire over what proved to be the winner.

Final Score:  Greencastle 1-15, Beragh 2-11.
